Good is the enemy of great

From Celebrity Hair to Financial Software

17 October 2008
At 37 years of age, Matthew Meath is not only Founder and Director of Australia's top software provider to the financial services industry, AMEE Easy Software Solutions, but was also a highly successful international hairdresser to the stars and the entertainment industry in his previous career life.

Matthew's extreme corporate me change saw him begin working life as an award-winning hairdresser for international companies such as Matrix (L'Oreal), tailoring tresses for stage work, fashion shows, music clips, CD covers, including award-winning Max Sharam's "A Million Year Girl", films and TV.  Matthew was ranked 32 in the world and held successful positions in US, UK, France and Australia.

On the flip side, Matthew also taught at Melbourne Pentridge, teaching convicted criminals the fine art of hairdressing techniques as part of their rehabilitation.

At the age of 26, Matthew decided to learn more about business so he closed his very successful salon in Melbourne and completed a Diploma in Financial Advice and an Undergraduate in Economics.

Matthew later became a financial advisor, and while managing a practice in South Melbourne, Matthew identified the need for Easy BrokerageTM and Easy DealerTM, and in 2001, AMEE Easy Software Solutions was born.

With more than an estimated $500 billion worth of funds in their management systems, AMEE Easy Software Solution's Easy DealerTM and Easy BrokerageTM manages commissions from approximately 400 financial planning offices who have thousands of clients.

According to Matthew, the driving force behind the giant leap of faith in converting his career dream into reality was a simple and seamless decision.

"To many, starting a new career is a daunting prospect, however, I found it to be relatively uncomplicated to step out of my comfort zone of hairdressing into the unchartered territory of financial software", he said.

"The thing that I found that links hairdressing, financial planning and business is people. You must love people.  People really ignite my passions - as well as economics and politics."

"Being an adrenalin junkie by nature, with interests in rock climbing, scuba diving and motor bike racing, this energetic nature allowed me to swing that corporate pendulum into the unknown, and for me that was an exciting road to take."

"Apparently only 5 per cent of people who think about changing their jobs actually do it, so I feel lucky that I had the courage and tenacity to give it a go."

Matthew has sound advice to those who wish to leap into another area of career:

  • Assess your current job - identify likes and dislikes
  • Research new career path
  • Identify transferable skills
  • Formal education and training
  • Networking
  • Gaining experience
  • Finding a mentor
  • Being flexible and adventurous
